About Karnival

WHO ARE WE?

Karnival is The University of Nottingham’s student-run fundraising organization that in 2016 raised over £2.4million for various charities around the world. This makes us the largest of our kind outside of the USA. We are run by a group of 12 students, voted for to lead and coordinate our growing team of Karnival reps. We are a group that for around 65 years have, and continue to work tirelessly raising and volunteering as much as we possibly can for a huge range of worthwhile causes – and we are always on the lookout for more new and exciting opportunities!

RAG Raids: Throughout the autumn semester we send groups of up to 1000 students, lead by their Karnival reps, to different locations all around the country in fancy dress to shake their buckets for charity. In 2013 we raised over £262,000 for various charities and causes all over the country! We also won awards from Breast Cancer Campaign for our Wear it Pink! Mega-Raid and our ‘Mag 7 Collection’ meaning we raised £38, 347.92 in 2013!

Challenges: Alongside Student Adventures we help hundreds of students embark on life changing challenges and adventures, from trekking Mt. Kilimanjaro, to discovering the ruins of Machhu Picchu, to traversing the artic! These fundraising challenges ensure essential support for a huge variety of charities that we partner with across the UK.

Kontact: Kontact is a huge part of what we do through Karnival, and not only that it is something we are planning to expand hugely in 2014. Through weekly hospital visits to the children’s ward in QMC, to activities for children with disabilities; such as zoo trips, Cadburys world trips and ‘The Kontact Games’, opportunities to volunteer and give back to our local community is at the forefront of our agenda in 2014. This will also be expanding to a greater role amongst the reps as they are currently planning their own projects within Nottingham and our local community.

Events: Throughout the year we put on a number of events in order to ensure we have the funds to successfully run Karnival for a year. Amongst many other notable events, our most famous and most successful is ‘7 Legged’ a world renown bar crawl, voted the best and largest in Europe. Last year it saw over 6,000 students take to the streets of Nottingham all in fancy dress and raised a phenomenal £65,000 that ensured the funding for Karnival 2014 continued another year. Our events are integral to ensure our financial viability and our connection with the students so that they are able to hear all about the other opportunities we offer.

Internships and Employability: This year we are launching a new internship and Employability scheme to ensure our students get the best possible value out of their work with Karnival during their time at Nottingham University. We are in the process of building connections with a range of charities to try and support students wishing to gain experience about working in volunteering or the charity sector and to better equip them with the skills they will need in future careers after graduation.
