“New Year, New Us”
With the opening of 2014, Facebook and Twitter were filled with people promising a new start to the year. With the status ‘New Year, New Me’ symbolizing dry months, better attitudes to work, and new diets, it is a proverb that Karnival can draw many parallels too in 2014.
The start of a new year brings in a new Karni Exec and a new batch of reps, all of us initially a little ‘fresh faced’ but keen and ready to take on the year ahead. I am writing as the also brand new ‘Publicity and Campaigns’ Exec, so understand more than anyone about taking on new roles.
The idea of this blog is to try and talk a bit more about what we do, and to try and provide some more opportunities for an insight into what Karnival really is. We have already begun trying to open new opportunities for students and reps alike, working on the launch of our new ‘employability workshops and internship scheme’, and having meetings with all of the reps to encourage them to create their very own ‘Kontact event’ (volunteering within the local Nottingham community).
But what else has our first fortnight entailed? It’s been pretty hectic, with Exec training, Rep training, the launch of our new event, The Student Soc Valentine’s Day Ball, and a big night at the Ice Hockey to contend with.
We’ve also had a fantastic first hospital trip, with the reps going into QMC to teach about the human body on the children’s ward. We’ve also seen some of our forward thinking Nightingale reps turn ‘#Neknominate’ on its head and have begun our first ‘#DonateNominate’ showing how this new fad can really be turned into something fantastic to help others.
We’ve hopefully started to become a newly confident group of exec and reps that have started to really create a cohesive vision for what we want to achieve this year. After quite a few team building opportunities (that included tidying up and sorting out our mess of an office) we think 2014 is going to hold some exciting prospects for us, including the chance to raise over £2 million for charity.
Hopefully you have heard of Karnival in some capacity, and with the start of 2014 the aim is to provide a more transparent insight into all the exciting things that we do and can offer to the students of Nottingham. We intend to achieve this, in part, by updating our blog regularly, with input from exec, reps and anyone who wants to chuck in their two-pence about what it is they are doing with Karni at the University of Nottingham.
It is a ‘New Year’ and a ‘New Us’ and so we hope that the students of the Nottingham Uni can get involved with all of the new exciting opportunities that we want to open up to them this year.
